Bowling for Columbine

In Michael Moore's documentary "Bowling for Columbine" he strategically explores the effects of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the tragic outcomes of the infamous shooting at Columbine High School. He goes about his discoveries in a variety of different ways and strives to appeal to all audiences. Moore shoots for humor, sympathy adn vengeance. This brilliant film is immensely eye-opening and urges the audience to think about the content on a deeper level. Unlike most documentaries, Moore keeps it short and powerful. Everything he says and does is delivered with impact.

Moore uses what some would say are questionable tactics to obtain valuable feedback from Charlton Heston. Heston is caught off guard by Moores sly demeanour. However, this film shows the viewers how countries, especially the United States, that people are increasingly reliant on guns and the NRA.

This documentary catches and keeps the attention of the audience and will get minds reeling and
hearts racing. It contains something for everyone and it is highly recommended. It is a must-see.

Paparazzi People

In the article “The New Paparazzi”, written by Emma Teitel, she explores the concerns of uploading pictures of particular people or parties onto social media and the negative outcomes it has on individuals. Teenagers must be more self-aware; “it’s impossible for them to control who takes their pictures and where they turn up online.”

Although some people may not think twice about the photos that get uploaded to social media, the pictures that appear on the internet may affect future educations and careers. A potential boss or manager could base a decision to hire someone from looking at that person’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or other social networking sites. There are images of people that show them “…drinking, smoking, and occasionally doing both…” The only way to avoid starring in party pictures, it seems, is to skip the party all together. It has dawned on some that if you skip a party, pictures from that event will haunt you forever causing you to feel left out. Today “…you can’t really attend a social gathering without risking the chance of ending up on Facebook.” Those photos, once uploaded, are out there in the cyber-world forever and they will have an impact on people’s lives. Inappropriate images of an individual can dictate what job they obtain in their future.

SLAM Poetry

Slam poets use language and their voices to create unique poems that are packed with emotion. Slam poets are able to capture you from the beginning and attack you with their anger, their sadness, their love and their passion. They make you feel exactly how they feel. Slam poetry opens your eyes to problems that are bigger than you and shares an idea of what life is like outside of your world.
In "If I Should Have A Daughter", Sarah Kay raises many points about how people walk with armor and pretend life is easy. It's not. When she has a daughter she will strive to make sure that there is no veil of a fake reality over her eyes. The way she sees the world is exactly how it will be. She won't go diving into life expecting only positive outcomes but she'll know that she has to work for what she wants.
Pretty. To some it's the hair, the clothes, the make-up... Who cares if you're a decent human being right? Katie Makkai's, "Pretty", explores the obsessiveness of being "pretty" on the outside and how no one attempts to see what's on the inside. "Pretty" is a mask.

The Stress About The Dress
Most girls, you would think, spend their grade twelve year obsessing over their grades and exams in order to be able to do something, anything, with their life after highschool. You're wrong, for the most part. As September comes rolling around the thoughts of big hair, poofy princess dresses and six-inch stiletto heels creep into their minds. Indecisiveness is present in every girl's mind as she ponders the many options that she has to choose from. Mermaid or princess dress? A-line or sweetheart neckline? Something with sleeves or should she go strapless? Does she want to spend the night yanking and pulling up her dress as gravity has it's way with it? Of course, you cannot forget one of the most important components of the fabulous ensemble... The hair. To fashion an elegant updo or to curl it into tight spiral ringlets. Either way she would feel radiant as the soft summer breeze swirls around and moves... Nothing. The wind moves absolutely nothing. The secret weapon, commonly known as hairspray, has been dispersed on top of and within the once in a lifetime hair-do. She feels like royalty with the local paparazzi snapping photographs of her breath-taking gown. It is a night to remember. Until from across the way she sees a stunningly familiar dress. Her dress. Heat rises to her face, growing as red as the blossoming flowers around her. Don't mess with the dress.

Mikayla is quiet and for the most part she enjoys keeping to herself. Like Belle, from Disney's Beauty and The Beast, the highlight of her day is venturing off to the bookstore after finishing yet another exhilerating story. Mikayla does not focus on what is on the outside but what is on the inside of others. Although Mikayla is quiet she relates to Peter Pan's fairy companion, Tinker Bell. If you know her well, she does not have to speak for you to know what she is thinking. Tink struggles with getting to know new people, as well as Mikayla, however once she gets more comfortable she begins to open up. Some of you may remember a certain princess with a love for animals. Snow White of course, she treats every living thing with love and care. She finds beauty in the simplest of things. Both Mikayla and Snow White always have their group of loyal friends who would do anything for her. Mikayla shares a strong bond with her family, especially her sister. Mikayla would do anything for her family, just like Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games. They both share a love for nature.
